Shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 24, 2021, the San Jose Police Department received a call about a 3-year-old little girl named Arely Naomi Proctor, who was unresponsive, not breathing and likely deceased. On February 27, 2012, 19-month-old Ezekiel Stephan began to show signs of being sick. He wasn’t eating, he was having difficulty breathing and swallowing and initially, his mother thought that he might have croup, which typically sounds much worse than it is with that deep chesty cough. Over the next few days, Ezekiel’s condition began to worsen, to the point of his parents calling 911 because he had stopped breathing altogether. Ezekiel died just a week after being admitted to the children's hospital, on March 16, 2012, from bacterial meningitis. But his death would very quickly spark public outrage, a media circus and two trials where his parents would be closely looked at for their criminal negligence in providing the basic necessities of life for little Ezekiel. On Jan. 3, 2022, in the town of Slaughter, Louisiana, the Slaughter Police Department responded to a call at a residence regarding an unresponsive person. The first time I ever heard the name Melissa Lucio was actually when Kim Kardashian tweeted about her and how she was innocent and should not be executed - which is kind of sad but at least Kim is using her time to tweet about things that actually matter.
